    2.2 Definition and classificationof hypertensionThe continuous relationship between BP and CV and renal eventsmakes the distinction between normotension and hypertension dif-ficult when based on cut-off BP values. This is even more sobecause, in the general population, SBP and DBP values have a uni-modal distribution.

    In practice, however, cut-off BP values are uni-versally used, both to simplify the diagnostic approach and to facilitatethe decision about treatment. The recommended classification is un-changed from the 2003 and 2007 ESH/ESC guidelines （Table3 ）。Hypertension is defined as values ≥ 140 mmHg SBP and/or≥ 90 mmHg DBP, based on the evidence from RCTs that in patientswith these BP values treatment-induced BP reductions are beneficial（see Sections 4.1 and 4.2）。 The same classification is used in young,middle-aged and elderly subjects, whereas different criteria, basedon percentiles, are adopted in children and teenagers for whomdata from interventional trials are not available.
